For the purposes of this discussion, we consider two "generations" of Forerunner watches. The "old generation" includes model numbers: 101, 201 and 301, which was subsequently replaced by the models 205, 305 and 405 - the "present generation".

Like the Forerunner watches are similar

All Garmin Forerunner watchesall-in-one GPS unit from the wrist, that is, the GPS antenna is mounted at the clock.

This is distinct from other GPS manufacturers like Timex watches body, Suunto and Polar, which is necessary to help ensure an external GPS device. Forerunner with its clocks, you can simply use the watch and you're ready to go .

The Garmin watches also share some amazing sports watch features proprietary. Some are found only in some models, but most areall the clocks in the Forerunner. Below is a summary of these common characteristics:

The main difference between the generations is the GPS chipset. In short, the next generation of the brand is far from collecting the GPS signal, the signal falls less frequently and are more reliable in terms of higher accuracy than the older generation watches.

Memory
Surprisingly, older clocks save an incredible 5,000 rpm in theirMemory, while their modern counterparts can record "only" 1,000 rpm.

Features
The current generation of precursor to the support capabilities of courses (you can measure against previous workouts). The older generation does not.

Simultaneous data fields
The older generation Forerunner watches display all three fields of data in real time. The 205 and 305 watches display four. The 405 has a smaller screen and shows only 3 though.

As the "older generation" ClocksDiffer

The clocks 101, 201 and 301 all seem very similar, but there are some big differences between them.

Heart Rate Monitors
The 301 is the new generation just older Forerunner was noted that a heart rate monitor supported.

PC connectivity and data transfer
The 101 supports data transfer of the PC, which connects the 201 to PC via serial interface, while the 301 connects via USB

How "current generation" ClocksDiffer

Now consider the current generation of older units 205 and 305 for the 405th recently published

Heart rate monitors and external devices
The devices support 305 and 405 and an optional foot pod and HRM, the 205 is not.

PC connectivity and data transfer
All clocks support data transfer via USB, but the 405 transmits wirelessly to a USB ANT.

Watch and form factor
The 205 and 305 look identical (except for color). They are big, bulkyand a rectangular face. The 405 looks more like a real clock.

Simultaneous data fields
The 205 and 305 display to 4 data fields, the 405 points 3
